Edco components from its original Swiss factory were some of the most perfectly made bicycle parts we have ever seen.
The maker of Edco parts, Edouard Dubied & Cie, was started in 1867, first producing knitting machines. The firm grew and in 1902 began making bicycle parts. For a time, early in the twentieth century, the company owned the patent for presta tire valves.
By the 1980s, Edco, headquartered in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, was making a nearly complete group. To complete the group, Edco derailleurs were made by Simplex and the brakes were produced by Modolo and Weinmann.
While Edco's aluminum headset was particularly prized, the company's hubs, bottom brackets and other components were the best money could buy. In 1993 Edco was the first company to make hydraulic brake/shift levers.
Sadly, the company could not withstand the ferocious competition from Asian firms also making first-rate parts. In 1997 the company went bankrupt. It was revived in 2007 by a group of engineers with new headquarters in 'sHertogenbosch, Netherlands. Because one investor in the new firm pulled his money out of the company, Edco again went bankrupt.
