Stronglight is a revered component maker most famous for cranksets and headsets. The firm started making cranks just before the second world war.
In the 1970s and 1980s the biggest French bike makers equipped their best bikes and teams with Stronglight cranksets. Most notably, Peugeot pro and semi-pro bikes were Stronglight equipped. Bernard Thevenet won two Tours de France using Stronglight equipment.
Here's is some technical information from about the 1960s a customer was kind enough to send us.
The firm is located in the French bike making capitol, St. Etienne.
Here's Thevenet winning the 1977 Tour de France using Stronglight.

Stronglight/Mavic threadless JP1000 cartridge bottom bracket with hollow axle. New, $100.00
The basic design of this bottom bracket is the same as legendary Mavic 610 & 616 bottom brackets. The tapered lock rings tighten against the bottom bracket shell sides. It does not engage the bottom bracket shell threads. The shell has to be chamfered, but there are many shops that have the special Mavic chamfering tool.
This is the best solution if you have a bottom bracket with stripped threads.
About this bottom bracket as sold by Mavic, the website lecycleur.com wrote:
"The 610 bottom bracket is amongst the best bottom brackets ever made. It was not lightweight, weighing in at 285g for a 114 mm bottom bracket, but it fits any bottom bracket box whether it is Italian, English or metric. It would even fit a bracket with wasted threads thanks to its ‘universal floating’ concept."
We have this bottom bracket in two configurations
68 x 110, Part# 63215. We have five in stock
68 x 114, Part# 63214. We have four in stock

A closer view.
The cups' bearing surfaces and the other side of the spindle.
For those buying our vintage Stronglight spindles, they have ISO square spindle taper. These are compatible with Campagnolo, Nervar, and T.A.
If you have a JIS crankset (Ritchey, S.R. most Shimano, Specialized and Sugino) the crankarms will sit about 4.5 mm closer to the frame when using an ISO spindle than if a JIS spindle were used.
And here's Stronglight's guide to the 1970's-80's spindles
Stronglight spindle, 118mm for Stronglight competition bottom bracket, ref. 65. Used, $50.00

Stronglight double spindle, 118mm for Stronglight 49D double cranksets. Used, $30.00
- Many Stronglight spindles are difficult to identify. We think this spindle is for the 49D crankset, but we can't be sure.
- We are pretty sure it is from the 1980s.
This makes it easy to know its size.
And from the other side.
Stronglight double spindle, 121mm for Stronglight 49D double cranksets. Used, $30.00/each
Many Stronglight spindles are difficult to identify. We think this spindle is for the 49D crankset, but we can't be sure.
We are pretty sure this is from the 1980s.
Definitely 121
And from the other side. Looks great.
Stronglight No. 34 bottom bracket French-threaded Cups. Used, $25.00
- These were produced from the 1950's into the 1970s for Stronglight steel cottered cranksets.
- There is a small pit in the fixed cup, which we have tried to show in the second photo.
- We are reasonably comfortable with this product identification, but if you were to tell us that you thought the cups were T.A. 121-D, we wouldn't get into a fight with you over it.
Not new, but very serviceable.

Stronglight No. 34 bottom bracket English-threaded fixed cup. Used, $20.00/each
This could actually be from any number of Stronglight bottom brackets produced from the 1950s into the 1970s. The No. 34 is just our best guess.
Here's the cup's outside
The bearing surface.
Stronglight Vintage Italian-threaded (36x24) adjustable cup. Used, $20.00/each
We believe this is a cup for Stronglight No. 34 bottom bracket, or perhaps an "Axe Creux" BB. It could date back to the 1950s, or could be later production. Stronglight used similar parts on different cranks for many years. Moreover, it could also be a T.A. cup.
Our best guess is that this is a vintage Stronglight adjustable cup.
Here's the bearing surface.
