The Sputnik was so different, so enjoyable, I had this Mondonico built for me.
It truly wasn’t built by Antonio, as it was a “Mondonico approved” frame, built by a trusted friend of Antonio’s. Bill McGann, founder of Torelli Imports, had sold the business to Todd Linscott by this time. I ordered this track frame thinking it would be built to the geometry of my Mondonico road bikes, but when it arrived, I found the head tube to be much longer and the top tube much shorter. I was told that Antonio hadn’t kept any of his measurement charts when he retired, and the resulting frame was based on my height only.
I ordered a second frame, having taken measurements from my existing bikes and waited for this one to arrive.
It rides better than the Jamis, though the cost per level of pleasure is astronomical in difference. I can’t say that Spirit is a better ride than Foco, as those milliseconds spent coasting or shifting gears, allows one to assess the ride quality, and fixed gear riding does not allow those milliseconds to take place! Given the right weather conditions, it would be my first choice of my bikes to ride!
