After reading The Best Rails-to-Trails of the Pacific Northwest, a book no longer in print, I built this bike. Some of the trails had the ties and rails removed, but the rock ballast was left with no improvement, and a suspension fork was a must. I’d also used my ’86 Stumpjumper Comp with its rigid fork as a commuter and paved trail use, but no longer wished to challenge myself on it as a mountain bike. The Stump has two additional sets of wheels, both set up with studded tires, leaving one set at home and one set at work for sudden weather changes. When navigating frozen ruts, I’d often wished the Stump had a suspension fork, and I have studs waiting for use on the Ritchey now. I have mostly used the Ritchey as a post-chemo trainer bike, but look forward to finding adventure off-pavement in the future.
Here I am post-chemo, using the Ritchey as a trainer bike.
