Raleigh Bicycle Company is one of the oldest bicycle companies in the world, founded in 1885. For much of the company's history, Raleighs were produced in Nottingham, England, in what was at one time the largest bicycle factory in the world. In recent years, the firm has changed hands several times and is now owned by the Dutch Accel group.

From the 1980 Raleigh catalogue: The Raleigh Competition GS has a short wheel base racing geometry. Reynolds 531 double-butted tubes, stays, and fork blades. Campagnolo Gran Sport equipped. Hand crafted quality. Weinmann alloy brakes and rims. Brooks Professional saddle. Chrome plated rear stays and fork blades. Color: Black and Pearl Silver. For the aspiring racer.
