South Salem Cycleworks Museum:
Bike E recumbent bicycle
First off, The Bike E recumbent bicycle is not electric. Production of the Bike E began in 1993 and continued until August 2002. For a while it was the best-selling recumbent bike. In 2001 the company is said to have sold 4.6 million dollars worth of product.
Still despite those impressive sales, the company needed to keep borrowing money and selling stock. In 1998 Bike E turned to bike maker Giant Manufacturing to produce its recumbents.
The business' failure is blamed on the cost of three separate U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission recalls and the ensuing lawsuits, devastating the firm's sales and reputation. Bike E sued Giant for the defects while Giant blamed third-party vendors. It was all too much for the small firm.
After Bike E failure, investors tried to launch a new recumbent company, BIGHA, but it failed as well.
Here's a video of a happy owner of a Bike E explaining this special bike.
