A Brief History of South Salem Cycleworks

Note: Our storefront may be closed, but we remain in business, ready to fill your cycling equipment needs.

South Salem Cycleworks started in 1991. Specializing in bicycle sales and service we have been active in promoting alternative modes of transportation for ecological reasons and for the conservation of paving new surfaces. For two years in-a-row SSC won our class for the statewide Bicycle Commute Challenge sponsored by the Bicycle Transportation Alliance.

Michael Wolfe, owner of SSC, served on the Oregon Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee to the Department of Transportation for over twelve years. A life member of the League of American Bicyclists, Michael has served as president, vice-president and editor for the local Salem Bicycle Club. Active in the community, he received the Distinguished Service Award from the City of Salem in 1995, along with recognition for serving on the South East Salem Neighborhood Association. Additionally, he has participated in the State Street Renewal and Liberty Road Widening committees as well as other ancillary studies.

Recycling, A Business Philosophy

In support of our ecological beliefs the shop has never used dumpster service.

Everything from fluorescent bulbs to batteries to cardboard and packing material are recycled. Even unusable old bikes are broken down for parts and then recycled as steel or aluminum scrap. Organic matter makes it home to the yard debris container.

The shop uses recycled product packaging where it can and promotes products made from recycled products. It also uses organic degreasers for use within the service area and non-aerosol lubricants.

We also advocate the use of wind-generated electricity by using the Portland General Electric's Clean Wind program.

We proudly celebrate our EarthWISE certification in 2014. For more about the program and our participation, see this Statesman Journal article.

Best of all, the cycling business allows us to promote the use of an ecologically friendly transportation and a more healthy lifestyle. CYCLING! SSC has encouraged Bike Safety Classes for the local elementary schools sponsored by the Bicycle Transportation Alliance and is seeking partners in providing sheltered bike parking for the elementary and middle schools in the area.

Others have been very kind in recognizing our efforts make our business kind to the Earth:
